Tips for Choosing Fish for your Fish Tank Aquarium

Setting up a freshwater fish tank aquarium can be fun and the fish are relatively easy to keep. Before you purchase the fish you should cycle your aquarium correctly to ensure that there is a healthy amount of the bacteria needed to deal with the toxic wastes from the fish. When choosing fish from a shop carefully inspect the tanks to ensure that the fish are healthy and there are no dead fish in the tanks. Even before you go to the pet shop research the compatibility of the fish you are thinking of buying. Look for community fish that can be kept together. Some examples are loaches, barbs, tetras, guppies and catfish. Some fish may be peaceful when young but grow into bullies, tiger barbs are good examples here. If you can find killifish they make good fish for beginners. Avoid overcrowding. Larger fish will need a larger tank, Angel fish for instance should only be kept in tanks larger than ten gallons. You should also research the conditions needed for the fish you intend to buy. Check out the ideal temperature for the fish. Goldfish will need a lower temperature than tropical freshwater fish such as guppies or tetras. When you purchase new fish for an established tank always place in a quarantine tank for at least a week to ensure they are healthy.
