Techniques for Metal Detecting

Basic Technique

Keeping the coil level walk along slowly waving the coil from side to side. Deeper targets will be detected if you wave the coil slowly. The search pattern of most coils is cone shaped so an eight inch diameter search area on the surface will only be two inches at ten inches down. A few machines, the MineLab Excalibur for instance has a D shaped pattern so will cover a larger area. Go over the area removing the junk then repeat the search for targets that the junk was masking.

Discrimination

In a new area dig for all targets without using any discrimination. Remove all the junk and then go over again. In this way you won’t miss targets by using discrimination too early. A lot of junk sounds like treasure, aluminium foil for instance is easily mistaken for gold. If you discriminate too early you will miss good targets. After removing the junk use a grid pattern to find targets that were masked previously. You will do a lot of digging this way but you will find treasure. When you are more experienced you can begin to use the discrimination features.

Clear up After Digging

Fill in the holes when you are finished. This not only ensures you leave the area as you found it but also prevents other treasure hunters gaining clues from your search pattern and gain an unfair advantage.

Detecting after a Rainstorm

When the ground is wet after a rainstorm metal detectors often work better. Sand or other soil or debris will be washed away and can bring objects further towards the surface.

Where to Detect

Before you start to hunt it is always a good idea to do some research about the area. Try to find areas that were once hotel sites, market places, popular beaches or other areas where people gathered. Use your library, historic societies or the internet for your research. Many of these areas will produce old coins or jewelry. Old school yards, churches and ball parks are other good places to try. Remember to ask permission before you start to dig holes.
