Survey of Types of Terrariums

By Janet Ashby

Although the usual type of that most people think of when they see the word ‘terrarium’ is a plant terrarium or perhaps a reptile terrarium, there are a variety of different terrarium types that can be set up. They can be made to simulate different natural conditions by careful control of the light, heat and humidity.

They also vary greatly in size from a tiny one foot cube to a huge showcase in a museum and every size imaginable in between! For reptile terrariums a two foot cube would be big enough for turtles or small snakes, a tiny lizard only needs a small one square foot home.

For a beginner it is best to stick to one species only in your reptile terrarium as some species may not live together comfortably or may even make a meal of each other.

Types of Terrrariums

Desert Terrariums

Consist of building sand (not beach sand), terrarium rocks and cacti and succulent plants. They are kept very dry and are suitable for desert tarantulas, box turtles, spiny lizards and other desert creatures. The temperature in a desert terrarium can be allowed to drop at night.

Rock Terrariums

Excellent for reptiles, rock terrariums are similar to dessert terrariums but planted with ground cover plants.

Plant Terrariums

A type of terrarium we are all familiar with providing a humid atmosphere for moisture loving plants to thrive. provide a nourishing base and check the humidity regularly and these terrariums will need little maintenance.

Swamp terrariums

Very wet and humid environments set up to accommodate frogs, turtles, newts and salamanders.

Tropical Rainforest Terrariums

Warm and humid terrariums to provide ideal conditions for orchids, ferns and bromeliads. Toads and frogs will like these conditions as well as small snakes, some turtles and geckos.

Woodland Terrariums

These types of terrariums contain a soil base plus leaves, pine cones, bark etc to simulate a woodland floor. Fresh water is included and scorpions, chameleons, snakes, some turtles will feel at home here.
