Some Information about Sea Anemones

By Janet Ashby

Sea anemones look like flowers with a retractable tentacle crown on top of a columnar body. The tentacles have nematocycts on the ends which are stinging cells to kill or immobilise the prey. They are then used to pull the dead or paralysed prey into the body cavity which is, in effect, one large digestive organ. Anemones prey on a wide range of creatures from microscopic plankton to fish that are larger than the anemone itself. Some species of anemone can also produce stinging cells on the pores of the central body when antagonised.

Although anemones appear to be sessile, rooted to the spot, they do in fact move along the sea bed by the action of muscles in the base of the central column. They appear to be part of the flora of the sea floor as a disguise to fool their prey into venturing too close.

Anemones vary in size considerably, from a few inches across to several feet. They have very long lives, some being known to live nearly a hundred years. They reproduce both sexually and asexually by budding from the column base. They also live in a wide range of ocean environments from tide pools to the deepest reaches. Most anemones however live on coral reefs and in tropical tide pools.

Large tropical species are highly coloured with red, yellow or pink tentacles that blend in well with other species in their environment. They form symbiotic relationships with other species, most notable with clown fish which are immune to their poison and feed on the left overs from the anemones meals. They are protected from predators by the anemones tentacles.
