Some Advantages of Heated Bird Baths
By Janet Ashby
A heated bird bath will keep the temperature of the water at around 55F, the best temperature for the birds to drink or bathe. Heated bird baths are either powered from an electric outlet or have solar panels built into the bowl to collect the suns rays. Solar powered are much easier to install, you won’t have to run a power cord from an exterior outlet and should be able to collect enough energy from the sun to keep the water ice free even on the coldest days. If you already have an unheated bird bath you can buy an electrical heater to attach to the bird bath. There are also bird bath de-icers that will prevent the water freezing and make it accessible to the birds. A heated bird bath is also likely to last longer than an unheated one as the constant freezing and melting of the water in an unheated stone, concrete or marble bath can cause damage that results in cracks and leaks. Maintaining a constant temperature will ensure that the bird bath is undamaged and will provide a source of warm water for bathing and drinking for your wild bird visitors all year around.
