Sinusitis : Is the Neti Pot a Cure?
As a [very) long time sufferer of sinus headaches I've tried just about everything to help. The list includes decongestants, antihistamines, steroid spray, nose surgery, grapefruit extract and lots more! If you're a sufferer of sinusitis no doubt you've tried lots of 'cures' too. many of them work temporarily but the problem always comes back. The only thing that has helped over the years has been decongestants but I really don't know what harm they are doing taking them long term. I've had no choice as without them I can barely function. Some time ago I heard about the yoga technique of Jalaneti or nasal irrigation using a neti pot. As any fellow sufferer will understand I'm willing to try anything and a non-drug way to relieve my problem is particularly appealing. I live in the Caribbean so they're no chance a neti pot will be available in a local store so I ordered one from Health & Yoga . The neti pot arrived with a very detailed booklet of instructions. Basically you prepare a body temperature isotonic salt solution and use it to wash out the sinuses. you can see a video demonstrating it at You Tube . It's very easy and not at all unpleasant. You must dry the nose afterwards to prevent infection. The whole procedure takes around 3 minutes. I've been using the neti pot for a month now and (fingers crossed) so far my sinuses have been clearer that I can remember for a long time. I'll reserve judgement on the long term effects until I've used it for a few months but so far I'm very impressed. The neti pot isn't a cure but if you have chronic sinusitis it's well worth a try!
