Setting up a Fish Tank Aquarium - Fishless Cycling
By Janet Ashby
You can cycle your new fish tank aquarium with a few small, hardy fish but a much better way is to do a ‘fishless cycling’. You will need ammonia and nitrite testing strips and preferably a starting bacteria culture obtained from an established tank. This can be a small amount of gravel or filter material. There are also commercial preparations that you could use instead such as Colonize by Dr. Foster and Smith or Biospira made by Marineland. You will also need a source of unscented ammonia. Method Add the bacteria culture to your tank then add 5 drops of ammonia for each 10 gallons of water. test the water and if there is no ammonia reading add a few more drops intil it registers on your test strip. Add the same amount of ammonia daily until you can detect nitrites in the tank. At this point the bacteria are converting the ammonia to nitrites. Reduce the number of drops of ammonia added daily to half this amount. Continue until nitrate readings are seen, at which point the ammonia and nitrite levels should drop to 0. Now do a 30% water change and your tank is ready for the fish!
