Planting a Strawberry Pot
Planting a Strawberry Pot Strawberry pots are urn shaped with pockets for planting the strawberries and usually made from attractive red terracotta. Planting a strawberry pot is easy and you’ll soon have an attractive feature for your garden as well as delicious strawberries. You can also grow herbs or other flowering plants, such as nasturtiums, in a strawberry pot but it’s best to use hanging plants that don’t mind their roots being cramped in the pot. You can mix flowering plants for an attractive effect but check that they require about the same conditions of water, sun and soil type first. Strawberry Pot Materials Strawberry pots can also be made from plastic or ceramic as well as the usual terracotta. Plastic pots are durable but light. The least expensive but the light weight can lead to the pot overturning in the wind so be sure to add some stones to the bottom before planting. Terracotta is, in my opinion, the most attractive material for a strawberry pot but it has the disadvantage that the porous material absorbs water from the soil so must be watered more often. Ceramic pots can be attractive and are heavy enough not to topple over even in a strong wind. More expensive than plastic check that the ceramic pot has drainage holes in the bottom as some do not and you don’t want your plants roots to be sitting in water. Planting Your Pot You will need one plant for each pocket plus three or four for the top. Use a good potting compost and mix in a slow release fertiliser. This is necessary as watering plants in pots slowly leaches nutrients from the soil. Add soil to the bottom of the pot plus a few stones if you need the weight until you reach the first pocket. Plant a strawberry plant in the pocket then continue to plant until you reach the top. Finish by planting three or four plants in the top then watering thoroughly. For strawberries place the pot in full sun and check if the soil is dry daily. For other plants check their preference for sun or shade and place in a suitable place in your yard or on your patio.
