Maintaining the Temperature with an Aquarium Chiller
By Janet Ashby
During the summer months, especially if you live in a southern area, it can be difficult to maintain the correct temperature in your salt water aquarium. One way to keep the temperature low enough is to use an aquarium chiller. They are fairly expensive but they can prove economical. If you spend long periods away from the house it is cheaper to use an aquarium chiller than leave the air conditioning on. it is also much better for the environment! Aquarium chillers, although expensive to buy, are almost maintenance free and last a very long time. They have no parts to be replaced and do not need to be cleaned. When you purchase a chiller look for the recommended tank size and buy one that is slightly more powerful than you need. The price of a more powerful unit is not much more and using a chiller recommended for a slightly larger tank will increase the lifetime of the unit and it will also be be much quieter. The temperature that you need to maintain in your reef aquarium will depend on the natural environment of your corals. Ideally you should have corals from the same natural environment and maintain your temperature to suit them. In most aquariums however corals come from different environments so the best option is to maintain a temperature of between 75 and 80 degrees. There are less expensive methods to keep the temperature down. Blowing air over the water surface or through the hood using a fan can be effective and decreasing the time that the lights are on in the summer months can also help.
