Lionfish Invasion in the Caribbean

By Janet Ashby

A recent study by Mark Hixon of the Oregon State University have highlighted a threat to native fish species in the Caribbean. Predatory Lionfish, native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans are thought to be responsible for the reduction of juvenile reef fish by up to 80%. Lionfish,Pterois volitans, were released into the Atlantic Ocean close to Florida during the 1990’s and have now invaded the Caribbean Sea.

In addition to the reduction of the fish population the invasion of Lionfish has other consequences for the ecosystem in the Caribbean.Reducing the number of herbivorous fish could lead to the overgrowth of seaweeds which could smother the coral population of the reef.

In their native Pacific Ocean Lionfish are controlled by Groupers but these have been reduced in number in the Atlantic from overfishing so there is no control of the population.

Mark Hixon and other scientists are working to find a solution to the Lionfish invasion cause a major ecological disaster.
