How To Saddle a Horse

By Janet Ashby

Saddling a horse is the same for a Western saddle or an English saddle. Learn how to saddle your horse with the steps below.

Before Saddling

Always groom your horse before saddling. Ensure there are no sores or bald patches around the saddle area. These could be signs that the saddle is ill fitting. Brush thoroughly to ensure no dirt or grit is present that could cause irritation and leave the hairs on the back flat.

Saddling

Saddling is usually carried out from the left side but it can be done from the right side if you prefer. Place the blanket in the horse's back. For a Western saddle fold the blanket in half first and place on your horse's back with the fold at the front. If you have a blanket with attached rings endure they are in an up position not under the blanket against the horse. To ensure that the hair lays flat place the blanket over the withers then slide it into place. Also check that the blanket is folded evenly with no creases.

Hook up the stirrups on the saddle so that they won't hit the horse then lift it high enough to be able to place it onto the horse's back without disturbing the blanket. Set it down gently by placing a little higher on the back then allow it to settle in place.

Check to make sure the blanket is still smooth and the hair of the horse is still flat. Go around to the other side of the horse and release the stirrup. Check the blanket on this side too. Grasp the girth by reaching under the horse and buckle in place loosely. Slowly tighten until you can just insert your fingers between the horse and the girth. Do not over tighten. Blanket rings can now be hooked to the saddle.

Finally

Always check the girth each time you mount to ensure it is still the correct tightness.
