History of the Skateboard - Part 2

By Janet Ashby

The 1980s

During the 1980’s many companies were being run by the skateboarders themselves. Vert ramping was to the fore at this time and the ollie, a no hands aerial was developed by Alan Gerfand in Florida in 1976. At the same time the grabbed aerial was developed by Tony Alva and George Orton in California. Although the vert ramp skateboarding was pushed by commercial interests most people did not have access to vert ramps and street skating was popular with the majority of skateboarders. Pioneers such as Rodney Mullen kept freestyle skating at the forefront, inventing many of the tricks still popular today such as the kickflip and the Impossible.

During the later years of the 1980’s skateboarding evolved to accommodate the street skaters. However with few parks available for skateboarding many skaters used public property and shopping centers, resulting in many property owners and businesses banning skateboarding on their properties. attract new skaters.

The 1990s - Today

Today street skating dominates the skateboarding scene. Boards are usually between 7″ and 8″ wide and 30-32″ long with wheels made from very hard polyurethane. Wheel sizes are small, boards are lighter and more manageable making tricks easier to perform. Board sizes have changed little since the 1990’s. Today a largely symmetrical shape with a relatively narrow width is the norm, derived essentially from the freestyle boards of the 1980′2.

In 2004 Go Skateboarding Day was initiated by skateboarding companies to help promote the sport and is celebrated on June 21st.
