History of Skateboarding Tricks and Culture
By Janet Ashby
In the early days of skateboarding tricks were mainly confined to two dimensional maneuvers like wheelies, riding on two wheels or pivots, spinning on back wheels, hippie jumping, jumping over a bar or long jumping over obstacles. With the introduction of ramp skating and skating parks tricks began to change. Skateboarding was transformed in 1976 when Alan Gelfand invented the ollie. Largely confined to Florida before 1978 it began to spread to the West Coast and then via the media, worldwide. The ollie is usually the first trick a new skateboarder learns and has the effect of the skater popping into the air with the skateboard stuck to the feet. By 1982 the ollie had been adapted by Rodney Mullen to a flat ground trick. He also invented the ‘magic Flip’, later called the kickflip, the 360 kickflip and many others. The ollie which allows skaters to perform mid air tricks with only the skateboard and no other equipment forms the basis of the majority of tricks performed today. Skateboard Culture Skateboarding grew from the surfing culture in California but soon spread to areas in the United States far away from surfing or surfing or surfing culture where it developed it’s own image. It’s early image was of non-conforming and reckless rebels. This image has faded recently as it has evolved into a more mainstream sport. Some magazines still portray skateboarders as rebels with an emphasis on punk but others, notably Transworld Skateboarding show a more professional image. Urban youths, reggae fans, hard rock fans are drawn to the sport through the use of their favorite music styles in many professional skaters videos. A more positive image has also been portrayed in films such as Lords of Dogtown and Grind which depict skateboarders with a less rebellious outlook and a healthy sportsmanlike attitude.
