Growing Plants in Your Fish Tank Aquarium

By Janet Ashby

Live aquarium plants add a new dimension to your freshwater fish tank and also remove nitrates from the water that are harmful to the fish. They look much nicer than plastic or silk plants too!

Some aquarium plants are easier to keep than others so a good place to start is with easier plants such as Hygrophila polysperma, Java Fern or Vallisneria spiralis. Some things you need to be aware of before you buy your plants are listed below.

Water Conditions

Plants need different water conditions so you need to check out the pH, hardness, temperature and lighting needed for the plants you are buying.

Substrate

In order to grow plants successfully in the fish tank you will need a good substrate. Substrates are sold specifically for fish tanks that will supply the plants with the required nutrients. Plants can be placed in the gravel but you will need to add an iron supplement to the water regularly.

Lighting

Plants need an adequate level of lighting in order to perform photosynthesis. Different plants will need different levels of lighting so check out the requirements for the plants you are buying. Plants also need a source of carbon dioxide. For a lightly planted tank the carbon dioxide produced by the fish will be adequate but for a heavily planted fish tank a carbon dioxide injector may be necessary.

The Fish

Some fish love to nibble on plants or even to uproot them. Goldfish and Oscars love to uproot plants and Silver Dollars will enjoy eating them.

In Conclusion

Research the water conditions and other requirements of the plants before you buy them. Buy a good substrate for planting and ensure any fish you already have will not eat the plants!
