Fall Lawncare Tips

Now that summer is past and fall is upon us it’s time to check out some lawncare tips for fall. The following tips are dependant on which type of grass your lawn is composed off. Tt may be a warm season turf or cool season turf. To find out either ask a local expert or check out the grass. Cool season turf comprises bentgrasses, bluegrasses, fescues and ryegrasses. Warm season grass may be bermuda grass, buffalo grass or zoysiagrass. Fall Season Lawn Care for all Grass Types The following tasks need to be performed regardless of your grass type. * Applying herbicide for broadleaf weeds
* Check out and correct the pH of the soil.
* Apply lime to acidic soils and sulphur to alkaline soils
* remove thatch on your lawn with a rake or using an aerator
* remove leaves with a rake or leafblowerperform maintenance on your power equipment before storing away for the winter. Cool Season Grass Tips Cool season grass needs adequate watering during the fall as it is still growing vigorously. This type of grass also needs fertilising in the fall by applying one pound of nitrogen fertliser for each thousand square feet of grass. There is no need to adjust the height of the lawnmower cut as the grass is still growing
Warm Season Grass Tips Do not fertilise warm season grass in the fall as this may interfere with the process of hardening for the winter. Adjust the lawnmower cut height as warm season grass has slowed down in growth rate considerably by the fall. The cutting height should be increased by half an inch. Lawnmower Cutting Height Always mow dry grass at about three to three and a half inches. Do not cut it shorter than about two inches and only remove about a third of the surface leaf each time you mow. This will ensure that the clippings are short and can be left to fertilise the lawn. Keeping the grass clipping bulk low prevents the need to rake up the clipping and will be good for your lawn. Although this means you will have to mow more often it will lead to a much healthier lawn and you are actually mowing and fertilising in one step! You could also use a mulching lawnmower which will chop up the clippings and distribute them evenly on the lawn.
