Easy Craft Ideas - Lip Balm Recipes
Lip Balm Recipes A very easy craft idea! Lip balm can be made with a variety of easy to find ingredients. You can use vaseline, petroleum jelly or cosmetic grade beeswax. Containers Small glass pots or old lip balm containers can be used but they must be sterilised first. Wash thoroughly with soap and water then rinse out with rubbing alcohol to sterilise. Finally rinse with water and dry before using. Colouring You can colour your lip balm with small amounts of new lipstick. Used lipsticks could well be contaminated with bacteria so it’s best to only use a new lipstick. Melting vaseline, beeswax or petroleum jelly Before you can ad the other ingredients you need to carefully melt the lip balm base. There are a variety of ways to do this but whichever you choose only heat the base sufficiently to melt it. Do not overheat. you can use a microwave but it is very easy to overheat with this method. If you do use a microwave heat for 30 seconds, then repeat if it is still solid. I find the best way is to place some of the base material in a plastic bag and float in some hot water until it melts. Two teaspoons of base material will make a small pot. Ingredients to add Add the following ingredients carefully until the taste and/or the colour is right Chocolate Lip Balm - cocoa powder Mint Lip Balm - peppermint oil Almondy - Almond Oil Vanilla - Vanilla Oil Citrus- orange, tangerine, lime or lemon essential oils Vitamin E - puncture 3 vitamin E capsules and squeeze out the oil into the mixture. Tea Tree Tea - add 4-5 drops of tea tree oil Moisturising Lip Balm Mix 1 1/2 teaspoons of beeswax and 1 1/2 teaspoons of Shea Butter and melt carefully. Cool slightly then add 1/2 teaspoon Jojoba oil and 1/2 teaspoon of sweet almond oil, 4 drops of essential oil and the oil from 3 capsules of vitamin E. Pour into your containers and allow to cool. If the balm is too hard add a few more drops of almond oil. Lip Glosses Cranberry Add together 8 cranberries (or other red berries) a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of almond oil. Heat gently then stir and use a spoon to mash up the berries. Strain through a sieve or muslin then pour into your container. Honey Mix together a teaspoon of honey with three teaspoons of petroleum jelly. and warm gently to melt. Pour into your container and leave to cool. Once you have successfully made your first lip balm or lip gloss, experiment with different flavours and colours. Any essential oil can be used and the base ingredients are very cheap!
