Considerations When Buying a Mailbox

By Janet Ashby

Mailboxes can be more than a box for your mail. They can be expressions of your taste and enhance the individuality of your home. The mailbox is among the first thing a visitor will see when arriving at your home so make the most of the wide range of mailboxes available and to impress your visitors and add elegance to your home.

The range of mailboxes available is enormous and includes decorative, traditional, contemporary and themed mailboxes in a wide range of materials and colors. There will be a mailbox in this wide range that is perfect for your home.

Some Basic Considerations When Choosing a Mailbox

The type of mailbox that will be right for your home depends on the delivery method for your mail. Does the mail truck stop nest to the curb and place the mail in a curbside box? Or is your mail delivered to your door by a mailman on foot? For the former you will need a mailbox on a post at the curb, for the latter a wall mounted mailbox next to your front door will be appropriate.

Mailbox Styles

The style of your mailbox should be similar to that of your home. Mailboxes styles fall into two broad areas, traditional and contemporary. If your home is a traditional Victorian style you should go for a traditional mailbox. A contemporary home needs a contemporary mailbox to compliment it.

Mailbox Materials

A variety of materials are used for mailboxes. Aluminum, galvanized steel, plastic, brass and cedar are some of the materials used. Aluminum is a good choice as it is light and rust free and would be especially suitable in coastal areas. Steel may be standard gauge or heavy duty which rust resistant and will last for many years. Plastic mailboxes are durable and also rust resistant but lack the elegance of metal mailboxes. Brass mailboxes will also last for many years if correctly maintained.

Mailbox Sizes

Mailboxes come in a variety of sizes so choose one to suit the amount of mail you generally receive. Post mounted mailboxes are made in extra large, large and standard sizes. Wall mounted mailboxes come in sizes from small to extra large

Mailbox Colors and Finishes

Mailboxes may be painted with semi gloss or high gloss paint or with metallic paint to simulate copper or brass finishes.
Mailbox Features

Many mailboxes now come with a lockable door, either using a key or a digital keypad. Some mailboxes have double doors to allow front or rear access. If you have newspapers delivered you may like a mailbox with an attached storage space for newspapers.

Mailbox Rules & Regulations

Before you purchase a mailbox check that it meets local regulations. In the US check the United States Postal Services Guidelines. Mailboxes should have USPS approved stickers. You are also required to inform your local PO to check that the placement and height is correct. Curb side mailboxes are usually installed 41 to 45 inches from the surface of the road to the mail entry point or the floor of the mailbox. They are also placed between six and eight inches from the road edge or the face of the curb.
