Choosing Outdoor Wall Lantern Lighting

Placing outdoor wall lantern lights around your property is an easy way to enhance security and provide a welcome for visitors. Some considerations when deciding on the best wall lanterns to use are ease of installation, cost, security and style. The best way to decide where to place your lighting is to go out at night with a flashlight and use it to light up areas around your garden, patio or yard. Some areas will need bright lighting for security, others softer lighting for a dramatic effect. Some techniques to be aware of are backlighting, uplighting and downlighting. Backlighting is used to dramatically show off an object by shining alight onto a wall or other structure lying behind the object. This will create a silhouette of the object. Uplighting is done by placing a light below the object and lighting it up from below. This gives more depth to the object as the light shines on the surface. Downlighting is used to simulate moonlight or sunlight and can be used when security is an issue on walkways, stairs or driveways etc.
