Choosing Outdoor Lantern Lights
By Janet Ashby
Outdoor lantern lights will enhance your garden or patio, make it safer and more secure and allow you to spend more time outdoors. Having a well lit front entrance will make it more welcoming to guests as well as allowing you to identify visitors. A warm welcome is achieved by placing wall lanterns on each side of your front door or placing a pendant lantern inside your porch. For rear or side entrances place a single lantern on the left side of the door. You should also place a wall mounted lantern on the garage face for security at night. Driveways, steps and paths should be lit to allow safe movement at night. Post lantern lights are ideal for this purpose or use low level solar path lights to give a soft even glow over the walkways and surrounding flower beds. On porches, patios and decks low voltage lights can be placed under railings, benches or steps. A spotlight placed on a tree will create a moonlight effect as the light floods down through the tree branches. What size outdoor lantern light do you need? Selecting the right size lantern light can be tricky. here are a few tips to ensure you select the right size for the place you are installing the lantern. For lanterns placed beside doors the lantern size will be based on the height of the door. For a single lantern on one side of a door the lantern should be approximately 1/3rd the height of the door. For two lanterns on each side of the door the lantern should be 1/4 the the door height. The bulb filament should be about 65″ above the door threshold. This can be adjusted by using different mounting arms. Make sure the lantern you buy is large enough. From about 50 ft away a lantern will appear to be half its size so if in doubt select a larger rather than a smaller lantern
