Choosing a Fish Tank Aquarium
By Janet Ashby
Fish tank aquariums can be purchased in a range of sizes from tiny bowls to five hundred gallon tanks. You will want to buy a tank that is the right size for your room and for the fish you would like to keep. Here are a few tips to help you choose the best fish tank aquarium. Fish Tank Aquarium Size The bigger the tank size the less maintenance needed! If you are a beginner a good size to choose is a tank of between 20 and 30 gallons. Smaller tanks will lead to more work trying to keep the water balanced and are easy to overcrowd. A very rough guide to the size of tank is 1″ of fish to each gallon of water but err on the size of fewer fish rather than be tempted to overcrowd your fish. This also assumes that you have adequate filtration and aeration. Fish Tank Aquarium Shapes Acrylic tanks can be purchased in a wide range of shapes including hexagon, cylinder, round as well as the more traditional rectangular shape. You can even purchase a wall fish tank or a coffee table fish tank. The traditional rectangular shape is probably the best as the surface area compared to the water volume is large and allows maximum gas exchange with the air. Other shapes, with smaller surface areas will need more maintenance and more often water changes. Buy the largest tank that you can afford and that will fit into the area you have assigned for it. It will be easier to maintain, you can keep more fish and the water quality will be better. Fish Tank Aquarium Location The location of your fish tank will dictate the size and shape that you will purchase. Also consider the weight of the aquarium when filled with water and decide if you need a proper stand or will be placing it on a table or shelf. Ensure that wherever you are placing it can hold the weight of the tank which can be as much as 200 pounds for a 20 gallon tank. Acrylic or Glass Fish Tank Aquariums? Glass fish tanks are heavier than acrylic but are generally cheaper. They occasionally spring leaks which can usually be easily fixed with silicone sealant. Acrylic fish tanks come in a variety of shapes but scratch easily. They rarely leak as they are made in one piece without seams. Although more expensive than glass fish tanks they last longer and any scratches can usually be removed.
