Care For Your Lawn - Winter Lawn Care Tips
By Janet Ashby
If you live in a northern area you may be wondering if snow is bad for your lawn. On a well prepared lawn, snow will do no damage. So how do you make sure your lawn is prepared for the first snow fall. Remove all the Leaves Before the first snow fall it is a good idea to clear all the leaves off the lawn. If you leave them on the lawn they will be buried under the snow and moisture trapped underneath them will lead to saturated lawn. In addition water in the snow will cause faster break down of the leaves leaving a layer of rotting leaves all over your lawn. By the time the snow melts damage there will be considerable damage to the lawn. Keep the Grass a little Longer On the last cutting before the winter leave the grass a little longer than usual. There is a balance to be achieved here as you do not want the grass too long as it will make clearing the leaves harder but too short and the first snow fall could leave your lawn with frost damage. One way to ensure the correct height of cut is to set your lawnmower to the middle setting. Do Not Walk on the Snow Covered Lawn Once the lawn is snow covered it is best not to walk on it as it will pack down the snow and damage the lawn underneath. Avoid walking on it until the snow melts. If this is not possible clear a narrow path to walk on and use your hands to loosen the snow occasionally to prevent damage. With care your lawn will suffer no damage from even a heavy fall of snow!
