Archery Safety Tips

All the family can enjoy the sport of archery but, as in all sports, everyone involved must make sure they understand how to pursue their sport safely. Bows and crossbows are not toys and should always be treated with respect. Carefully read and understand all the safety instructions before you begin.

* Always be aware of who is around you and DO NOT point your bow and arrow at another person or pet

* DO NOT shoot an arrow straight into the air as it could come down and hit you or another person

* DO NOT shoot an arrow where you cannot see the target area

* Use bows and arrows only in a designated place that has been set aside for target practice. Targets should have at least 20 yards clear space behind them.

* While looking behind targets for arrows lean your bow on the target to alert others that you are there. If possible also have someone act as a look out to prevent others using the target

* If you are using broadheads use the correct target not a standard archery target

* Check wooden arrows for cracks regularly. If you spot a crack break the arrow to ensure it will not be used accidentally

* For longbows and recurve bows use a bow stringer

* Check the bowstring regularly and replace immediately if the condition is poor. Also check the bow for any twisting or cracks

* DO NOT overdraw the bow. This can break the bow and cause injury. DO NOT dry fire the bow by drawing back the string without an arrow

* Spectators must always stand behind the shooters

* Stand to one side when removing an arrow from the target and make sure no one is standing behind you

* Draw the bow level with the target. DO NOT draw the bow higher then lower to the line of the target as a dangerous premature release could occur.
