A Survey of Garden Windchime Types

Throughout the centuries people have been making and enjoying the soothing sound of home or garden windchimes. Made into lovely decorative art pieces by the Chinese and Japanese they enjoy a popularity in both the East and the West for their ability to soothe and uplift the spirit and to enhance any garden or home. Windchimes are suitable for both outdoor and indoor use so be careful to purchase one that is suitable for where it will be placed. Some features to look for include, of course, a pleasing sound, but durability is also important especially if the windchime will be placed outdoors. Metal Windchimes Metal is the most popular material for windchimes as it is durable to wind, rain and the hot sun. Metal windchimes can be tuned to particular notes and tones so are reputed to make the most beautiful music. Some famous types of tuned windchimes include Music of the Spheres windchimes and Woodstock windchimes. Bamboo Windchimes Bamboo windchimes are also very popular. Although they cannot be tuned they make a deep pleasing sound. They are less durable than metal windchimes and over time the bamboo becomes damaged by rain and sun and may split. They do however last for a considerable time especially if placed on patios or porches out of the direct sunlight. Ceramic and Glass Windchimes Many unique designs can be found in ceramic and glass windchimes as they can be be made in many pleasing colours and designs. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor they are durable and are unaffected by UV light from the sun. Melodies and Notes The greater the number of tubes on a windchime the more notes it will play. Shorter tubes will produce higher pitched notes and lower, fuller notes will be produced by longer tubes. Tubular windchimes made of aluminium or pewter are the most popular and produce chimes with very good sound quality. Some windchimes also consist of a series of bells which play in the wind. Where to Place Your Windchime Windchimes can be place in doorways, on the patio or porch or hang them from a tree or post in the garden.
