A Buying Guide to Fantasy Swords
By Janet Ashby
You can find fantasy swords in all shapes and sizes such as fantasy dragon swords, samurai fantasy swords, Lord of the Rings swords and Highlander swords among many more. If you are buying a fantasy sword you need to know what to look out for. If you want a fantasy sword to look good when hung on the wall as a display ornament you can buy a cheap sword but if you want a functional fantasy sword or a high quality sword you need to know exactly what to look for. It is even possible, but fairly rare, to find good examples below $300. Cheap Fantasy Swords Many fantasy swords are made very cheaply in China or Pakistan and although they look fine in a photograph it is very obvious they are cheaply made when you get to handle them. They are not well made often having loose hilts, brittle blades and very little detail. However if you are only paying $20 you get what you pay for! High Quality decorative Fantasy Swords There are good numbers of reasonable quality decorative swords. One good designer is Kit Rae who has been designing fantasy swords since 1984. Swords designed by Kit Rae are the most copied fantasy swords you can find. Some sellers will even show an image of a genuine Kit Rae sword but what you actually get is a cheap copy. Kit Rae fantasy swords can be found for around $100. They are made from stainless steel they are true works of art and probably the best value around. They are however decorative rather than functional pieces. Functional Fantasy Swords Functional fantasy swords are not common partly because fantasy designs rarely translate to functional blades. There are some manufacturers however who do make functional fantasy swords that combine fantasy design with a functional sword. dark SentinelOne is the Dark Sentinel Sword from Anwei forge. This sword is a cross between a dueling sword for Europe and a Japanese katana. Other manufacturers are Windlass Steelcrafts who make swords from tempered carbon steel. Most are based on the Dungeons and Dragons role playing game or are replicas from books such as the Wheel of Time. Generation 2 make Lord of the Rings fantasy swords and a large fantasy sword called the Sword of Chaos. They concentrate more on historically accurate replicas of medieval swords however.
